Two dated items bear on how oil and gas buyers approach machine shop supplier qualification for the remainder of 2026. One is Texas permitting activity. The other is a scheduled revision to the quality management standard most machine shop certificates are issued against.
Texas drilling permits, July 2026
The Railroad Commission of Texas reported issuing 693 original drilling permits in July 2026 in a release dated August 6, 2026. The total included 612 permits to drill new oil or gas wells, 11 to re-enter plugged wellbores, 9 field transfers, 58 for re-completion, and 3 reclass.
By well type, the July 2026 total broke down as 103 oil, 54 gas, 497 oil and gas, 29 injection, and 10 other permits. RRC District 8, covering the Midland area, accounted for 275 of the 612 new-well permits. In the same month, Commission staff processed 982 oil, 545 gas, and 249 injection completions.
For comparison, RRC reported 674 original drilling permits in July 2025, of which 580 were to drill new oil or gas wells.

The sixth edition of ISO 9001
ISO lists the sixth edition of ISO 9001 at stage 60.00, International Standard under publication, with a publication date of September 2026. The standard record was updated to that stage on July 10, 2026.
ISO states that the sixth edition will replace ISO 9001:2015, that the fifth edition was published in 2015, and that a global consultation in 2023 produced a consensus that revising the standard would enhance its value. ISO states that certified organizations will have a transition period to adapt.
Two dated points follow from that record. Certificates issued against ISO 9001:2015 remain valid during the transition period ISO describes. A supplier certificate referencing either edition during that window is consistent with the published schedule.
What a quality management standard covers
ISO publishes ISO 9001 under the title Quality management systems, Requirements. The standard sets out requirements for a quality management system. A certificate issued against it records that an accredited certification body examined that system and found it conformed. It is a record about a system rather than about any individual part.

- Coordination of outside processes such as heat treating, plating, and coating through an approved vendor network, with quality verification before and after each secondary operation and certifications from each processor included in the documentation package.

Dates on the figures
The Railroad Commission of Texas publishes permit and completion counts monthly, and a more recent month may be available. ISO listed the sixth edition of ISO 9001 as under publication as of the record’s July 10, 2026 update, with a September 2026 publication date. Both should be re-checked against current publications before use.
